Like you I am a scientist and like you did in the past, I am currently working on translating great scientific literature into tips. In my case it’s child development research into play tips for parents. I can already see that the outcome of my experiment is going to be the same as yours. Great content but who cares. I hadn’t even thought about my key influences. I know some important ones, but don’t see how they would share my content. I thought I was writing content for my potential customers. Is your SEO that works course the same as the content that gets results course? Sorry if I sound a bit dim asking that question.

Paid search, social media advertising and display advertising are all excellent ways of attracting visitors, building your brand and getting your site in front of people. Adjust your paid strategies to suit your goals – do you just want more traffic, or are you looking to increase conversions, too? Each paid channel has its pros and cons, so think carefully about your objectives before you reach for your credit card.
According to Google Adwords, their click-through rate averages at only .4%. That is only 4 actual clicks per $1000 spent and not all of them will turn into customers. While getting traffic to your site may not result in income directly, just like marketing, it is still very worth it. This is because of the potential it has to make you money indirectly. Those indirect profits could come your way in the form of purchases or through ad revenue. It all depends on how you have your site set up.
The web is built on links, and web users routinely use links to find the information they need. When a site links to your site, web users follow those links, resulting in web traffic, or referral traffic. When these backlinks, also called inbound links, come from high quality sites, they also tell Google your content is authoritative and trustworthy. This is important because inbound links from respected sites are an SEO ranking factor, so they can boost organic traffic, too.
Everyone loves press. Create a roundup blog post compiling 25 thought leaders in your industry. Find people you admire, people doing innovative things, people you look up to and even the best of your competitors. Include a short synopsis of them, their work and what they are doing that is unique and inspiring. Include a link to their Twitter handle. Once you publish the article send out a unique Tweet @tagging each person with a link to the article. Everyone loves unexpected press. Chances are most of the individuals you mentioned will retweet you and share the article on their social networks driving traffic to your blog and website. By going the extra mile, spreading kindness and giving props to individuals doing good things in your field, it in turn helps you by driving big traffic to your website. That is what I call a win, win.
Let’s say you have a social media representative who’s out there sharing your content and talking to people about your brand. The rep has a major advantage over your brand Page, because he or she can “friend” people and message them right off the bat. On the other hand, Facebook has made contacting your Page or Group followers an increasingly intricate dance.
In the early days of the web, site owners could rank high in search engines by adding lots of search terms to web pages, whether they were relevant to the website or not. Search engines caught on and, over time, have refined their algorithms to favor high-quality content and sites. This means that SEO is now more complex than just adding the right words to your copy.

Even though traffic is intrinsically tied to conversation rates, it seems that too many people have a lot of misunderstandings regarding the relationship between these two aspects. For one thing, the size of the traffic you get does not matter If it doesn’t lead to the kind of conversion rate you need. If you really want to earn money from the visitors coming to your site, they need to be of high quality.

Thanks for sharing these great tips last August! I’ve recently adopted them and I have a question (that’s kind of connected to the last post): how important would promoting content be when using this strategy? For example, through Google Adwords. As I guess that would depend on the circumstances, but I am trying to discover if there’s a ‘formula’ here. Thanks in advance!
You can increase traffic from YouTube by creating YouTube ads, adding links to your description, adding annotation links to your video, or by getting other YouTubers to share your links on their videos. By creating a new video at least once a week, consistently and over the long haul, you’ll be able to drive more traffic back to your website. If you don’t have an audience yet, you can reach out to YouTubers with sizable audiences and ask them to become affiliates or pay their fee. This could work well in the short-term but it’s always a good idea to try to build out your own channels to lower your acquisition costs.
There are several successful online businesses that pay for traffic, then there is no doubt that you pay the money that you can not make a profit. People want to speak their minds and weigh in on subjects they feel passionately about, so building a community into your site is a great way to start a conversation and increase traffic to your website. Implement a robust commenting system through third-party solutions such as Facebook comments or Disqus, or create a dedicated forum where visitors can ask questions. Don’t forget to manage your community to ensure that minimum standards of decorum are met, however.
Headlines are one of the most important parts of your content. Without a compelling headline, even the most comprehensive blog post will go unread. Master the art of headline writing. For example, the writers at BuzzFeed and Upworthy often write upward of twenty different headlines before finally settling on the one that will drive the most traffic, so think carefully about your headline before you hit “publish.”
You understand and agree that all information, including, without limitation, text, images, audio material, video material, links, addresses, data, functionality and other materials (“Content”) that You or a third party allow, submit, post, obtain, email or transmit (or the like) to the Service (collectively, “Your Content”) is Your responsibility and not Our responsibility.

Once you've successfully linked your Googe Ads and Google Analytics accounts and imported the Analytics data into Googe Ads reports through the Googe Ads UI, the additional Analytics columns begin appearing in your Google Ads reports. These columns show statistics about what users do on your website after clicking an ad. These statistics aren't just for your landing page, but for your site as a whole. The table below describes the four Google Analytics columns in the AdWords API.

Once fake traffic has been directed to your site, or you have personally decided to buy it, you need to notice huge changes on your site. The most devastating effect on your site is when you are caught by Google or any other search engine. The search engine may block your index and also Google suspends your AdSense account. The bounce rate for your site may increase up to 90% or more, and this means the number of real visitors reduces dramatically.

Great article. My site has been up for several years now but I rebranded and switched from Blogger to WordPress about a year ago because I was told the reason why my traffic is so low is because I was using the wrong platform. I still haven’t seen an increase in my traffic and am very frustrated. I write in the health, fitness and parenting niche and I have over 30 experts that write for me, but I still don’t have the page views I would like. My paychecks are small and I am very frustrated. How do I find out what influencers in my niche are talking about and what they would like to share? I read tons of blogs, but most of them just review products or write about their kids, not a whole lot of similar articles. Where do I begin to find sharable content in my niche?
Build a strong list of high traffic, low competition keywords: Keywords are the foundation of all SEO work. Keywords are the words or phrases that users type into a search engine to find something. You can search for keywords related to your website by using free tools like Google’s Keyword Planner or other tools online. Look for high traffic (1,000 or more searches per month) and low competition if possible. If you have to choose between high traffic or high competition, choose a higher traffic keyword phrase.

What kind of advice would you give is your site is growing but seems to be attracting the wrong kind of traffic? My visitor numbers are going up but all other indicators such as bounce rate, time page, pages per visit seem to be developing in the wrong direction. Not sure if that’s to be expected or if there is something that I should be doing to counter that development?
If you have spaces for advertising on your website, you can increase your profits by allowing other websites to put pay-per-click ads on your site as you have on others. Then, not only might the visitors who come to your site purchase your products, but they could also click on some of the ads and make you even more money. After all, once you pay for that traffic increase, you’ll be able to show potential ad placers that you get enough traffic to your site to be a good investment. If you have room for enough ads, once you really build traffic, you may be able to offset the cost of your traffic by charging for theirs. In order to avoid scamming when it comes to pay-per-click ads though, it’s a good idea to charge a conversion fee on top of the click fee. This way, you can low ball the click fee to get advertisers to your site, but then charge them extra for each click that makes a purchase on their site. This recent change in pay-per-click has come about because of manipulative people making invalid clicks on ads in order to boost ad revenue with fake visitors.

So many businesses are focused on attracting new customers through content marketing that they forget about more traditional methods. Email marketing can be a powerful tool, and even a moderately successful email blast can result in a significant uptick in traffic. Just be careful not to bombard people with relentless emails about every single update in your business. Also, don’t overlook the power of word-of-mouth marketing, especially from people who are already enjoying your products or services. A friendly email reminder about a new service or product can help you boost your traffic, too.
Excellent post Brian. I think the point about writing content that appeals to influencers in spot on. Could you recommend some good, manual strategies through which I can spot influencers in boring niches *B2B* where influencers are not really talking much online? Is it a good idea to rely on newspaper articles to a feel for what a particular industry is talking about? Would love to hear your thoughts on that.
We purchased advertisement inclusion in two well-known opt-in / subscription newsletters. Both inserts were in the price range of $750 – $1000. For both campaigns we provided a banner ad with text for inclusion in a newsletter published on the internet and sent out to various email lists, made up of 25,000 to 500,000 opt-in subscribers. We were told to expect anywhere from 300 to 3000 click-throughs. From that number, 10% of the visitors might take out a free Opentracker trial, and of those trials in turn, a percentage of people would purchase website statistics subscriptions. We created separate landing pages for each mailing, so that we can very clearly see, by url, how many people landed on each page.

First of all, there are many different ways to bring traffic to your website. You may invest in an actual visitor package which will give you so many unique visitors for one price. On the other hand, you may decide to put up ads on other websites and in search engines. In this case, you will likely pay-per-click. Another way to direct traffic to your site is through sponsored searches. These are the search results that pop up at the top of a search and are usually highlighted because they paid for those spots.

Well, the age of print media is coming to a close. But there’s no reason why some enterprising blogger couldn’t use the same tactic to get new subscribers. Let’s say you have a lifestyle blog targetting people in San Francisco. You could promote the giveaway through local media, posters, and many other tactics (we’ll get into these methods shortly).
In-person promotion: Word of mouth is always an effective marketing tool and can be especially valuable for connecting your site with the offline world. Talking to your friends and people in your network is a great way to start. But you can also volunteer in your community, do speaking engagements, host or sponsor events, and seize other opportunities to connect with your audience face to face. Wherever you go, tell people about your site!

The more you engage with your community, the more exposure and profile visits you get. Google is paying more attention to the meaning of search terms and less attention to the combinations of letters and words. It’s called “semantic search.” Scroll through the search results and see if other phrases, not just the phrase you entered, are bolded. If you see synonyms and related words in bold text, that means Google has created a semantic link between your words and these words. Write these down.

Content marketing: Creating useful content that your target audience wants to see can help you attract and engage an online community. For example, a food shop could start a recipe blog, or a financial advisor might create a newsletter about saving for retirement. Content marketing includes blog posts, videos, email newsletters, podcasts, lists, magazines, how-to guides and infographics — whatever format will be most relevant to your brand and your users.

To give you an example, our domain authority is currently a mediocre 41 due to not putting a lot of emphasis on it in the past. For that reason, we want to (almost) automatically scratch off any keyword with a difficulty higher than 70%—we just can’t rank today. Even the 60% range as a starting point is gutsy, but it’s achievable if the content is good enough.
Finally, there’s the matter of the domain that your bought traffic will be directed to. You should always remember that when you buy traffic to your site, the nature of the site will determine what the response rate could be. In most cases, you can only use one domain per package, so you will have to buy multiple traffic packages for multiple sites.
