Google recommends that when you are starting your first remarketing campaign, you begin by targeting everyone who viewed your homepage. Just remember, that will increase your Google remarketing costs since your ads are being retargeted to more individuals, and you won’t be able to create ads that are quite as targeted. By targeting more narrowly, you can therefore increase ad relevancy and lower your cost per click.
Google is paying more attention to the meaning of search terms and less attention to the combinations of letters and words. It’s called “semantic search.” Scroll through the search results and see if other phrases, not just the phrase you entered, are bolded. If you see synonyms and related words in bold text, that means Google has created a semantic link between your words and these words. Write these down.
In addition to the various website- and user-based targeting methods, we can also layer on demographic targets for a user’s gender, age range, and parental status. Advertisers can either exclude or create custom bid adjustments for users based off these demographics. The implications for certain advertisers with a strong homogenous key demographic are clear. If your industry leans heavily on one gender, age range, or parental status (say, women’s clothing, retirement services, or baby care), demographic targeting may be a powerful tool for you to leverage.

RESULT: Let’s break this down. I am only serving my ads on science websites because of target and bid. Now let’s break down the Gender targeting. Since Bid Only does not restrict my targeting criteria, I am still eligible to reach all genders. So why would I use Bid Only for females? Because I can make separate bid adjustments for females. Perhaps I know that Females drive stronger conversion rates and therefore, I set a bid adjustment of +50% when the gender is female. To do that, I target females as Bid Only with a bid adjustment of +50%.
Great post Ross but I have a question on scaling the work that goes into producing the Kob score: how do you recommend you go about getting the MOZ difficulty score – do you do it manually then VLOOKUP everything or some other way? My current membership at MOZ allows 750 searches a day for KW difficulty so this can be a limiting factor in this research. Would you agree?
The hope is that other content creators will find the page useful and refer to it in their content. If your article gets referenced / mentioned / linked, then it’s Page Authority improves and it’s more likely to rank …and get more targeted traffic.
