In my latest ebook, I talked about some of my secrets when it comes to competitor analysis. Whenever I start a new online store, I’m always curious to know the main traffic sources of my competitors. This helps me understand which marketing channels I should prioritize. I sometimes use the free Alexa tool. All you need to do is type in your competitors website, scroll to “Upstream sites,” and look at the list of websites that were visited immediately before landing on your competitor’s website. If you see that Google tends to be the top choice, then you need to focus on Google Ads and SEO. If Facebook is the top website then you know you’ll need to create Facebook ads. Or if a niche blog is the highest source of traffic you can then focus on building out an outreach strategy to collaborate with that blog.
Building high-quality infographics is simply one form of clickbait. There are loads of clickbait examples that you can utilize, but not all of them are created equal. However, if you can build a great infographic that many people will link to, you can essentially create an automated marketing machine for your site. Ensure you hire a great designer to do this.

The website traffic checker Alexa helps with competitive research. In other words, if you want to know what your competitors’ traffic sources are, this is the tool you can use. Plus, it’s free. I use this website traffic checker when building new stores to see what the main traffic sources of my competitors are. You can also use it to monitor the competition’s popularity – is the traffic trending upward, stable, or declining. You’ll even see the website’s global or national rank.

It’s become even more important now thanks to the mobile sector, where there are plenty of prospective clients compared to the computer scene. While different search engines do come with select distinctions in their algorithms that affect how many regular visitors your site gets, the way to optimize your website for all of them are generally the same. You just need to make sure that you have the right keywords, have great links on your site, and excellent content.
Check and increase backlinks: Backlinks are links from other websites into your site. The more backlinks you have from authoritative sites, the better the search engines like your content. You can use a tool such as Ahrefs to check your current links and see what your starting point is. Adding backlinks takes time and effort. You can increase the number of links by adding resources to your site such as checklists, downloads and presentations that others want to link to or share.
Yep and sometimes it’s just being a little creative. I’ve started a little blog on seo/wordpress just for fun actually… no great content on it like here though… but because the competition is so tough in these niches I decided to take another approach. I created a few WordPress plugins that users can download for free from wordpress.org… and of course these link to my site so this gets me visitors each day.

Not sure exactly why, perhaps I used a number too big and since my page is about classifieds, it probably seemed too much to browse through 1500 ads, I assume? Somewhat like you would post 800 tips for better ranking? Don’t know, will try to change things a bit and see how it goes, but you really gave me some new suggestions to go for with this article. Another great use for tools that can help you boost your traffic numbers is for marketing. You can basically automate your social media efforts through various amazing tools that are available both for free and paid. Both have their pros and cons, but the important thing to remember is that you have options with regards to this particular aspect. If you don’t want to micromanage your marketing efforts, why not simply outsource that to a robot?

For example, if your brand/business is in high school, there will be low engagement until 2-5 when they are out of school. That’s true Thomas – this can happen when going after very competitive keywords. To avoid that you can just grab the first subpage you see ranking – subpages most of the time won’t have a lot of brand searches associated with them/you’ll see true topic value. It may be lower than normal, but in general can’t hurt to have a passive calculation when making arguments of what you might achieve.

There is some talk amongst SEO experts and gurus how CTR could be the biggest SEO factor of them all. That Google ranks sites high in the SERPs by which ones are clicked on the most and not by how many backlinks they have or how great their on-page SEO is. That does help but there is indeed some direct correlation in this claim as it makes sense since Google wants to rank the best, most perfect choice for a searcher and one way of knowing that, is by ranking the site that gets the most clicks highest in the SERPs.
5) Post at the right time. Let’s say you want to post in the r/Entrepreneur/ subreddit, but there’s already a post in the #1 spot with 200 upvotes, and it was posted 4 hours ago. If you post at that time, you probably won’t overtake that #1 spot, and you’ll get less traffic. However, if you wait a day, check back, and see that the new #1 spot only has 12-15 upvotes, you’ll have a golden opportunity. It will be much easier for you to hit the #1 spot and get hundreds of upvotes.
It’s not enough to just share content through social channels – you need to actively participate in the community, too. Got a Twitter account? Then join in group discussions with relevant hashtags. Is your audience leaving comments on your Facebook posts? Answer questions and engage with your readers. Nothing turns people off quicker than using social media as a broadcast channel – use social media as it was intended and actually interact with your fans.
What kind of advice would you give is your site is growing but seems to be attracting the wrong kind of traffic? My visitor numbers are going up but all other indicators such as bounce rate, time page, pages per visit seem to be developing in the wrong direction. Not sure if that’s to be expected or if there is something that I should be doing to counter that development?
