Here’s the thing… when someone types in a search phrase, they are actively looking for something. When they view a Google Display ad (which is displayed on sites using AdSense), they are in the middle of something else and may just pop over out of interest (or by mistake) and then carry on. We are not saying display ads don’t work, but if you are a new store trying to get more targeted traffic on a smaller budget, search ads will get you the best ROIs. Use display ads if you’re looking for branding or have ‘sexy’ products that you can back up with awesome creatives. When you do start looking at display ads, remember to keep an eye on those conversions and ensure that it’s right for your products before you invest a chunk of your budget there.

Google has several predefined interest groups that are available for targeting. Google will place individual users into interest groups based on their web behavior. The interest targeting is further segmented into “In-Market” and “Affinity” interest groups. Google has determined that users within the “In-Market” interest groups are closer to a purchase – i.e. are “in the market” for a particular service or product. For example, if I select the in-market interest group of Apartments for Rent, Google has determined that I am actively looking for an apartment to rent.

Brian, great post as always! Question: Do you consider authority sites (industry portals) a form of “influencer marketing?” e.g. guest blogging, etc? In some niches there are not so many individuals who are influencers (outside of journalists) but there are sites that those in the industry respect. An e-commerce store: You can buy traffic, but think for a second. Do you really think that they will purchase an item of your’s?. Try to get a targeted country wise or age appropriate set of customer mail list in case of an e-commerce website. In order to find this, you will have to research in the dark web and deep web. It will be expensive as hell if you want to purchase this traffic. Also SEO and re-targeting and re-marketing works well.

Instagram is a great way to drive traffic to your site. Be sure to use relevant hash tags when posting pictures or interacting with others. Take the time to comment on other relevant images from those who have large followings. However, be careful not to be too promotional on every post. Add value through a 3-to-1 ratio. Three value posts to one promotional post.
Yep and sometimes it’s just being a little creative. I’ve started a little blog on seo/wordpress just for fun actually… no great content on it like here though… but because the competition is so tough in these niches I decided to take another approach. I created a few WordPress plugins that users can download for free from wordpress.org… and of course these link to my site so this gets me visitors each day.

Building high-quality infographics is simply one form of clickbait. There are loads of clickbait examples that you can utilize, but not all of them are created equal. However, if you can build a great infographic that many people will link to, you can essentially create an automated marketing machine for your site. Ensure you hire a great designer to do this.
For Display campaigns, there is an option to let AdWords automatically find new customers. This allows Google to find new users that are similar to those in your targeting criteria. This also means that the advertiser has less control over where the ads serve and to whom they serve because Google takes over to find new customers. This was very interesting. I run a website that promotes sports entertainment amongst teenagers who are graphic designers or video editors. The foundation is in place (Over 60 contributors) so my only focus is how to blog consistently about what goes on in the sports world with appeal to teenagers. On the flipside, if your domain authority is in the 60s or 70s, your analysis isn’t about whether or not you can rank – you instead are trying to determine what keywords you can rank for without promotion, a nice luxury to have. In the 40s, you most likely don’t have that ability – every topic will require cold outreach in order to see the first page.

Guest blogging is a two-way street. In addition to posting content to other blogs, invite people in your niche to blog on your own site. They’re likely to share and link to their guest article, which could bring new readers to your site. Just be sure that you only post high-quality, original content without spammy links, because Google is cracking way down on low-quality guest blogging.
Organic traffic is the traffic you get when people follow links from a search engine results page and land on your site. Organic traffic contrasts with referral traffic which comes from links on other sites, and paid traffic, which is traffic resulting from ads. You can boost organic traffic by using content marketing, and by optimizing that content with SEO. Well-optimized content is more likely to get a high search ranking, and attract more clicks and traffic.
